Paddling Pfd Life
Falling into a river deep in the chest with a life jacket?

I can not swim, but as a kid I had the opportunity to paddle back with my feet with a PFD on. If such a situation, what are the moves that I use to either swim to shore, or upright? Keep in mind there is a moderate current. I know very little about swimming, and my first instinct is usually to gasp and flail.

When I went rafting in the river the guides told us to do this in the case kicked out of the raft: Lean back like you're sitting in a reclining chair. Relax. Lift your feet up to your fingers are near the surface. Keep your hands on each side. If you go through the rapids, you can use your hands to get around the rocks. It may sound strange, but it works. Even the people in our group who did not feel comfortable in the water has the hang of this immediately. I think the same applies if you are in a river that is not moving faster – but only in slow motion. The main thing to remember is to relax – the life jacket will do the job for you.
