On a spring afternoon in 1956, company president and founder Dick Meissner sat down in his garage to begin work on his first sewing contract. Phil Anthony Anthony Pools had just given him his first order to produce the Anthony McIntosh bag filter. Working alone and at night, Dick laid the foundation for the company that has grown to become the largest manufacturer of pool and spa filter elements in the world.

In those early years, residential filtration was in its infancy. As the market began to grow, Dick received new contracts sewing Swimquip first, and then Landon, Pac-Fab, and Paddock of California. In 1959 this company part-time has grown into a full time business. The new company hired two employees and quietly moved to a 2,000 square foot building in Van Nuys, California within one year, the young company has doubled in size and in 1962 occupied 6,000 square meters and had five full-time employees.

With the advent filter cartridge, the company saw its opportunity. The first elements of the cartridge were made of a paper type material that does not go very well in the environment of the pool. To the realize the future potential of the cartridge filtration, Meissner set out to develop a manufacturing process to improve this new medium. In 1964, research and gave the first round development of the industry with a new element made spunbonded, 100% polyester material called Reemay ¬. Developed by Dupont and adapted to the filtration Meissner cartridge, Reemay has become the primary filter material used throughout the industry pool and spa.

The period 1964-1972 has seen steady growth of new cartridge systems Reemay. At that time, however, the cartridge size is limited to only 6 square meters. The filter system achieved total surface of the manifold by numerous small cartridges. These cartridge filters worked well early, but were difficult to clean and maintain because the large number of smaller elements involved. Then in 1972, Meissner in partnership with Purex, industry developed first extended surface, cartridges of a single element. Meissner new manufacturing technology sytem given a filter of 100 square meters with only three individual cartridges. This concept quickly caught and only item 25 -, 50 – and 75-systems square feet of filter cartridges using Meissner soon came into the U.S., Baker Hydro, Hayward, Prime Minister Sta-Rite and others.

Throughout the 80 Meissner continued to work as a supplier of brand pump filter and producers to develop and improve filtration the cartridge. In 1984 Meissner elements of both and the cartridges being used in virtually every major brand name system filter. To meet this growing demand, the company developed the state of the art high speed equipment production. Exclusive Meissner, this production capacity allowed the company with a niche of quality and delivery that is unsurpassed today.

1985 was a pivotal year for Meissner, when several companies began producing branded Reemay their own items. Faced with a loss of business, but with tremendous production capacity, the company reinvented. Retaining its core business under the label OEM Meissner, the company has introduced and promoted Unicel brand of replacement filter elements. For the first time the full range of replacement elements built to specifications OEM was made available to wholesale distribution of a single source. Merchants and service technicians can easily get replacement cartridges from your dealer local, but not carry that particular brand of equipment.

By staying focused and specialized in filtration, Unicel has developed an expertise in an area very critical of the pool and spa industry. Today, Unicel services both in the OEM market and spa wholesale distribution business. Whether development the media or the cartridge design, Unicel is recognized as the industry leader.
